EQUIPMENT Equipment requirements are dictated by the style you choose to study and the grade you attain; the role of equipment is to keep you and your fellow martial artists safe and is therefore very relevant to the level of sparring that you are doing. There are no specific equipment requirements for either the Wrestling or the Cardio Combat classes, however it is advisable to purchase your own gloves for the Cardio Combat - we favour Boxing Gloves over Bag Gloves for versitility. You do not need any safety equipment to start, we can supply you with everything you need until you are ready to purchase your own. We keep stock of the main equipment and clothing with any surplus items strictly ordered as required. Because we offer all of our members a very personal service we are also happy to search out and purchase for you specialist or branded equipment, again ordered as required. The equipment requirements are specified by grade as indicated in the tables at the bottom of this page. This does not mean you have to wait until you have attained a certain grade before you buy any piece of equipment (you can buy them all on day 1 if you so choose); these are our guidelines to ensure that students have the correct safety equipment to spar to the level required for their particular grade.
EQUIPMENT EXPLAINED: Boxing Gloves - from £20 Used for hitting pads and to spar. They protect your own hands and soften the contact with sparring partners Mixed Martial Arts Gloves - from £25 A more versatile glove for MMA. The open hand design allows the wearer to both strike and grapple. Feet Pads - from £20 Like boxing gloves for the feet, these are a lightweight boot that pad the top of the foot for sparring. We stock a range of dipped foam feet pads, with vinyl and leather covered available to order. Shin & Shin-Instep Pads - from £9 We stock elasticated shin/shin-instep pads that pull up and on to the leg with foam covered padding protecting the shin/ shin & instep for sparring. Other types are available to order. Knee & Elbow pads - from £9 Similar design to shin pads being elasticed with foam padding over the contact area. Other types are available to order. You can wear any type of groin guard, we stock a deluxe sealed in cup with lower abdomen protector and wide elastic strapping. Other types are available to order. Chest Protector - prices vary The Jury is still out on how good these actually are which is why we leave them as optional; some of the chest protectors on the market actually cause more damage than they prevent. Designs range from Sports Bras with cup inserts to full plastic armout. All designs special order only. Gum Shield - £2.50 Essential even when not participating in head contact. Many designs available through most sports outlets. We stock the basic mouldable version. If you are using a gum shield regularly we recommend getting one made to fit by your dentist. Head Guard - from £20, for a decent headguard budget for around £40-£60 Head Guards are only required if you are doing head contact. Prices vary and tend to reflect quality. This is possibly the most important piece of equipment you buy - it is worth buying the best available. There are 3 main types of head guard - dipped foam (same type of material as the foot pads), leather/vinyl covered and moulded. We do keep some stock of the more popular designs. All others are available to order.
