THE ACADEMY

Attitude Martial Arts Academy was born out of the desire to create a training environment where we could meet the needs of each individual.  We wanted to teach smaller classes and offer a personal, safe and professional service. The goal was to develop an Academy that was not only practical but clean and well maintained, offering good facilities and equipment.  In September 2000 Attitude Martial Arts Academy opened it's doors for the first time.  We have come a long way since then, building both our reputation and our member base.  We now carry over 250 students, however our principles remain the same; -

At Attitude we restrict our class sizes to ensure a greater level of safety and focus along with more personal training.  Our bookings only system allows us to plan ahead and prepare classes to suit the needs of our students and ensure appropriate study.  We keep a clean and well equipped Dojo with good basic member facilities.  We pride ourselves on our honest, efficient service and endeavour to offer you everything you need to train in martial arts including encouragement and friendship.

We teach a variety of students from a very early age and with varying capabilities and goals.  We have our standards and do not necessarily make it easy.  We believe that training and progression should take time – it is not just about physical prowess but mental and spiritual growth.  If you are looking for an easy session or a quick journey to black belt, then we are not the Academy for you.  Our classes are tough and we have a reputation for training hard.  Our Instructors are experienced and knowledgeable professionals who would not ask anything of their students they would not be willing to do themselves.

We do not sell ourselves with glossy brochures or fancy adverts, we do not pretend to be something we are not and we would never try to attract students with false promises or misleading information.

THE INSTRUCTORS

(Pictured left to right, Sensei Gary Hewitt, Sifu George Carr, Sensei Amanda Hewitt and Gary & Amanda's son Kito Hewitt, December 2008)

Sensei Gary Hewitt, Sifu George Carr, Sensei Amanda Hewitt & KitoAttitude Martial Arts Academy was founded by  husband and wife team Sensei's Gary and Amanda Hewitt .  Gary and Amanda ran the Academy sucessfully for over 8 years before moving on in December 2008 to spend more time with their family.

In January 2009 we welcome Chief Instructor Sifu George Carr to the Academy.

Sifu George Carr,  has been studying martial arts since 1976 and teaching for over 28 years, he is a very knowledgeable and experienced Instructor.  Sifu George holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in both Lau Gar Kung Fu and Kickboxing and is well versed in many styles including Judo and Mixed Martial Arts .  He has dedicated many years to competition and has fought on most Association circuits around the UK, holding the North East Champion title in the under 60kg and over 35 years categories.  George retired from competition in 2002 to concentrate on teaching and on the development of his students.  In addition to taking the reigns at Attitude, he runs the well established Sunderland Martial Arts Academy.

Sifu George embodies the principles that first established Attitude Martial Arts Academy.  In taking over as Chief Instructor he vows to continue to provide a high level of tuition and service and aims to make a positive difference to all students' lives.

ASSISTANT INSTRUCTORS

The Assistant Instructor program is available to students interested in one day becoming an Instructor.  Assisting in the teaching of others helps students to learn more about themselves and their own skills, it builds confidence and character.  All assistants teach under the supervision of  Senior Instructor.  We currently have four Junior and one Senior Assistant Instructors at Attitude to whom we offer our gratitude.  These students willingly give up their own time to help coach a number of our Junior classes, and for that we are both grateful and proud.  We give thanks to:
